Story behind ‘Maa Tujhe Salam’ by AR Rahman

22 years ago AR Rahman composed “Maa Tujhe Salam” Album hit the market, which is produced by Sony Music in its initial stages when it’s entered Indian Market. They entered the market with the idea of promoting the local talent to the international markets.

AR Rahman was the first artist they have signed for this album and it was a huge hit and became a best seller. Till today on Independence Day or Republic Day we can listen playing “AR Rahman’s Vandemataram” in all the schools, TV’s, Radio’s across the nation. 

The album was released in the year of 1997, when Rahman was just turned into 30’s and turned 5 for entering into movies and his first movie album “Roja” was the biggest sensation in the all Indian film industries.

The idea of making a patriotic song was Mr. Bharat Bala, who was a schoolmate of Rahman. The background of making the album was to celebrate the 50 years of Indian Independence. 

20 years ago, it was a challenging task for them to shoot a video by travelling every corner of the country to capture the real beauty of India. At that time it was very difficult to reach to the desired location and not easily accessible. 

Even after all the hurdles and challenges they could able to make the India’s biggest patriotic album. 

“Maa Tujhe Salam” in Hindi version was written by Mr. Mehboob, who would work with Rahman for Rangeela and Daud. Tamil Lyrics were written by Vairamuthu.

Rahman took a break from his regular films to understand the actual thoughts of the director, then the biggest album has come out which was not only loved by the elders, it was loved by youngsters and even kids. 

For this album along with Rahman and Bharat Bala many international musicians worked. 

The album, which was composed 22 years ago, still it is chanted by whole India, and it will be further in future. It is one of the great compositions of AR Rahman in many of his compositions.
